This series of videos goes through installing Windows 95, setting it up for games, and creating new launchers for each. Luckly the other guide was produced by the lead developer of my preferred DosBox app, Magic DosBox. This guide is very thorough, but it uses the Exagear app (which is dramatically overpriced) or DosBox Turbo, which hasn’t been updated in a while and I fear has been abandoned. First, an almost 7-year-old post on the Fallout-specific No Mutants Allowed forum. Some searching online led me to a couple of different guides. I owned the first 3 games on GOG, but could I get these games running on a mobile platfrom? Could a DosBox app help me to recapture the darkly humorous magic of these games on-the-go? Researching Fallout on Mobile u/Srbyy below mentioned disk images - it's very likely (although not decided yet), that format will be based on MAME's CHD format - but it's missing some features still (but those are in the works last time I looked). After seeing a constant barrage of news concerning the… less than beloved Fallout 76, I felt the urge to revisit the classic Black Isle Studios games that generated one of my favorite franchises of all time. We also have pretty good idea how this feature should work at this point. We are talking to the game archivists, and gathering requirements. In DOSBox Staging we want to fix this problem correctly we are fixing underlying issues one-by-one (DOSBox Pure does not have these improvements, because it's based on DOSBox SVN). It failed every time because every implementer wanted to do it "on their own" and did not respect the requirements of DOS gaming community. 4 or 5 by my last count - all of these attempts failed and all those forks died. ZIP bundles like this for DOSBox were implemented by several forks / patches already. This libretro implementation of the "just a zip file" concept actually isn't important! What is important is that it'll create a standard for distributing dos games. With convenience, new generations can pick them up and play, just like many other systems (nes, snes, etc). Without it, slowly but surely the amount of people who can run these games grows ever smaller as old-heads like us who know dos and it's customs die off. Ok, you're all set, enjoy!"Ĭonvenience is key. You'll be able to say, "Here's Psycho Pinball, add this zip to your dosbox game folder with the others. You won't have to set everything up for them or walk them through how to install a game, set the right dosbox parameters, set up the right autoexec in the dosbox config, set things up to actually use your new config, etc for each new game. What this is critical for is bringing newbies into the fold. What's different here, and the part I find important, is the convenience - you just hand it your zipped game, and it handles everything for you.įor experienced users like you or I, who cares, we can already do that. I hope you like it :-)Īll of that is absolutely true, and I completely agree with what you said. I wanted to get this out before the holidays and to personally end 2020 with something cool. So try to be constructive and as technical as possible if something doesn't work as expected, I'll be thankful. This initial release is feature complete as of now for what I wanted to accomplish, yet it is clearly marked as intended for public testing. Other features are support for cheats, built-in MIDI software synthesizer (needs a SF2 soundfont file), disc swapping menu and a start menu that lists EXE files controllable by gamepad. Mouse, keyboard and joystick emulation for gamepads and an on-screen keyboard Automatic game detection with custom gamepad to keyboard mapping for many DOS games Support for save states and even rewinding As easy as a console game emulator by loading DOS games from ZIP files and saving into separate save files DOSBox Pure is a new fork built for RetroArch/Libretro, aiming for simplicity and ease of use. After 6 months of quite intense development, DOSBox Pure has been released for public testing.
